It wasn’t until I actually became invested in Superman’s mythology that I realized that my idea of him wasn’t based as much on anything I’d read or seen as it was on a series of conflicting cultural narratives that have entangled the character for decades—narratives that are now further complicated by DC’s decision to bring Orson Scott Card on board to write an upcoming installment of Superman.
In addition to being the author of well-loved science fiction books like "Ender’s Game," Card is someone who uses his status to publicly advocate for virulently anti-gay policies, and to express his own deeply homophobic beliefs. He's also someone with a history of bringing his anti-gay politics into adaptations of other stories. In 2011, he wrote a retelling of Hamlet in which most of the play's tragic events are directly or indirectly brought about by the fact that Old King Hamlet was gay.
